A splendid colored copy of certainly one of the most decorative maps of the African continent, engraved by Van Langren for van Linschoten's Itinerario. The two separate maps, which can be joined, are decorated with lavish Renaissance title cartouches. The map of the western coasts is embellished with 2 inset views of the Portuguese possessions of St. Helena and Ascension, as well as the coat of arms of Portugal surmounting the title cartouche in Latin and Dutch. The sea is ornamented with rhumb lines, compass roses, sailing ships and a sea monster. The map of the eastern coasts is the earliest one depicting that part of Africa, and covers the eastern Cape, Natal, Portuguese East and Kenya. Extending from Doara to R. do Infante, it also shows the island of Madagascar and the tip of Ceylon top right. As for the map of the western coasts, it is also lavishly decorated with compass roses, sea monsters, and sailing ships, while the mainland contains small vignettes of elephants, lions, and a scene with the Christian emperor Prester John. A superb copy free from any restoration. Mail: le-bail-weissert@wanadoo.fr
