A scarce map of Hondius published by Mariette
This rare and beautiful world map was based on the map by Hondius of 1617. It was published by Pierre Mariette in 1643 in his Théâtre géographique de France.
Only two states of this map are known. Our copy is in state 1, dated 1642 with the imprint of Pierre Mariette. It is superbly engraved and decorated with two celestial maps, circular diagrams containing tables of the winds and movements of the planets, and a perpetual calendar starting in 1637. The map is also embellished with vignettes of sea monsters, sailing ships and a Neptune. Centerfold restored, otherwise an excellent copy.
