BAILLEUL (Nicolas) .
Nouvelle mappemonde avec la représentation des
deux hémisphères
célestes, les disques du soleil, et de la lune, et les diférents
sentiments sur le mouvement des planètes.
Lyon, Daudet, [ca. 1750] . [51,6 x 71,5 cm]
A rare and impressive French world map
This is one of the most spectacular world maps
of the second half of the eighteenth century.
Dedicated to Bertrand René Pallu, intendant
of the city of Lyons, it was engraved by Delamonce
and published by the Lyons mapseller Daudet.
It is notable for its splendid baroque style
and its rich decoration: each side displays
astronomical diagrams of the sun, the moon,
the eclipses, the winter and summer solstices
as well as the theories of Copernicus, Tycho
Brahe, Ptolemy and Descartes; while the top
and bottom of the map are livened up with figures
representing sciences, arts, and the four continents. Centerfold and several
tears repaired. Colored.
